EXERCISE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Exercise helps you to feel amazing while you’re dropping those extra pounds. There are a multitude of diverse ways to get active. While you may already have a fitness routine, perhaps this chapter will inspire you to try out something new. It is fun and exciting to diversify a workout. Specific movements are geared toward different results. Here are some suggestions that are divided up into three broad categories: aerobic exercises, weight and resistance training, and strengthening and stretching exercises. Choosing something from each category will result in a balanced routine. Exercising forty-five to sixty minutes, three to four times a week, is an excellent initial goal. Consistency is the most crucial factor. Keep up with your program, and you will be happy with the results. If you have trouble staying motivated, you may want to get a personal trainer or join some exercise classes.
Aerobic exercise
The definition of aerobic is “in the presence of oxygen.” In order to produce energy, each cell in the body requires oxygen. Maximum energy is brought into our cells through aerobic activities. These are sustained activities that depend on oxygen for energy. These activities burn fat, condition the cardiovascular system, and build endurance.
You can start your exercise program with thirty to forty minutes of workouts, three to four times per week, especially if you are a beginner or have been inactive for a while. It is best to increase the time and intensity of your workout as you gain strength and progress in your exercise regimen. Choose from the various activities that are emphasized in this chapter (or maybe something not mentioned). Remember that the greatest benefits come from consistency. Go at your own pace and listen to your body. If you have any health concerns, check with a doctor and then get active.
Sitting down for extended periods or living a high-stress lifestyle builds up excess emotional energy and chemicals in the body that will dissipate through aerobic exercise. Taking a break to exercise can alleviate unhealthy actions such as drinking large amounts of coffee, eating too much food, taking drugs, or lashing out at coworkers, spouses, or kids. Working out dispels pent-up emotions and channels them into a positive outlet.
There are many enjoyable aerobic activities that are also effective for weight loss, such as dancing, bicycling, walking, swimming, jogging, skiing, or racquet sports. Remember the days when step aerobics was the craze? Now not too many health clubs offer step classes. Check out your local club to see what they offer. Find something you love to do. It is a lot easier to stick with it when you’re having fun.
The following pages contain some options to choose from. There is also an abundance of creative activities that are not listed here. So get creative. Just remember to keep moving a little bit more each week. Even small changes, like taking the stairs instead of an elevator or parking your car further away from the entrance, can add up. Activity will rev up your metabolism, and you will begin to burn more calories.
